Dear Colin,
Or should I say "dear monkey?" The other day, when you should have been going to bed, you climbed onto your changing table. I guessed that you climbed on there from your bed. So, I rotated your changing table so it wasn't in climbing range from your bed. That worked for a few days.
Then last night I found you on your changing table again! What's wrong with lying down and going to sleep on your bed? What's so interesting about sitting on the changing table? Luckily, you don't try to climb back down. You simply yell for help. This time I guessed you used your toy chest and diaper pail to climb on top. So this morning I rearranged your room once again!
This time your changing table was moved between your dresser and closet under the window. I moved the chair to the other corner at the foot of your bed. I then changed your diaper and left the room for no more than 2 minutes. When I came back, YOU WERE ON YOUR CHANGING TABLE!!! You fooled me! I thought you were using other furniture to climb up. Instead you were using the shelves. Way to go monkey boy!
So, I did the next logical thing. I took the changing table out of your room. I re-organized your dresser drawers so the bottom drawers now hold diapers, wipes, covers, and wet bags. I took the changing pad off the top of the changing table and now keep it under your bed. When it comes time to change your diaper the pad will simply slide out.
Daddy suggested that we just take the middle shelf off the changing table to prevent you from climbing. My only reservation about that is the table isn't mounted on the wall and I don't want you attempting to climb up and make the whole thing fall on top of you. I figure since you're super interested in using the potty we will attempt to potty train you in August. If you're ready and potty train fairly easily then we wont need a changing table anyway. If we try and you're not ready to potty train then that's fine too. We'll just change you on the floor.
Until then, please behave!
With all my monkey love,
Mommy
