Meet Baby Colin

Meet Baby Colin.  Third child.  First boy.  Treated like a prince by his big sisters.  Loves boob milk.  Hates sleeping on a flat surface.  Likes feeling snug in his swaddle.  Growing like crazy.  At one week of age he weighed 7 lbs 2 oz - 3 oz above his birth weight!
On, July 22, 2013 big sisters Michela & Penelope met Colin upon discharge at the hospital.  Michela saw him and said, "awww, coconut!  He's my brother."  Penelope saw him and said, "hold it!"  We all think he's a keeper and love our new family of five!

Penelope: "Back off!  He's mine!"

My Last Birth Story: 40 weeks 4 days

Dear Colin,

I guess I got my point across in my last letter.  That night (July 19th) labor began while driving to The Fish Market for dinner!  I expected another fast labor but my contractions did not come hard and fast.  Instead they started out mild and about 30 minutes apart.  By 6:45pm my contractions picked up to be around 10-12 minutes apart.  I thank Penelope for that since she breastfed before bed.  My contractions stayed around 10 minutes apart for a couple of hours so we called Grammy.  We thought that we would be heading to the hospital at some point during the night and thought Grammy would rather have a full nights sleep instead of being woken up in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately, my contractions started spacing out around 12:30am.  By 1am my contractions slowed to every 30 minutes.  Daddy and I started to get discouraged. We were both tired but too excited to sleep.  By 2:30am I told Daddy to go to bed and he finally listened at 3am.  I stayed on the couch and managed to get some rest between contractions.  Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep.  Around 5am I had a few contractions about 10 - 20 minutes apart.

Your sisters woke up around 6am and I had Penelope breastfeed again.  Thankfully, the breastfeeding worked again and my contractions started up again.  I began to think that my body slowed contractions in the wee hours so I could rest.  That gave me a little boost to think that things really were progressing.  My contractions stayed around 10-20 minutes apart all morning.

After 18 hours of early labor Daddy called labor and delivery.  I didn't want to call because I thought they would say that I was in early labor and not to come in until contractions were consistently 5 minutes apart.  While they did say that it sounded like I was in early labor, they said that we could come and get checked out.  I decided to wait to see how things progressed in the afternoon.

Once Daddy got off the phone, I had my breakdown.  I blame lack of sleep (2 hours of interrupted sleep) for my breakdown.  It was 1pm and I had been laboring since 5pm the night before.  I was afraid that I could continue the same pattern for days.  I felt exhausted, defeated, and discouraged.

Of course, Nana and Papi arrived at the start of my breakdown.  What a way to say hello!  Once I gained control of my emotions I was able to greet them.

After my breakdown my contractions started picking up again.  Maybe I needed to release the emotions to get the show started?  They were around 8 minutes apart for the next hour.  Around 3pm I told daddy that it was time to head to the hospital.  My contractions were coming every 5-7 minutes and I was having a hard time concentrating with Michela and Penelope playing loudly in the house.  I said goodbye to your sisters and headed to the car.

When I reached the car I had another contraction.  For some reason I lost it and cried through the contraction.  I couldn't help myself.  It hurt but I wasn't crying due to the pain.  I was crying because I was tired and I had just said goodbye to your sisters.  I knew I would be away from them for a couple of days.  From that point on I cried with every contraction.

When we arrived at the hospital we tried to find a "mom in labor" parking spot but they were all filled.  I had my eyes closed since I was having a contraction and it felt like daddy was driving in circles.  Turns out he was - sort of.  Finally daddy decided to drop me off in front of the ER so I wouldn't have to walk far.  He drove off while I waddled over to the benches.  While he was parking in the structure another contraction hit and I again started crying.  I tried to control the sobs since I was in public but that didn't happen.  Daddy arrived at the end of my contraction so I met him at the door.  He tried to get a wheelchair but had a hard time because you have to pull a lever in order for it to work.  Som eone working in the ER showed us how it worked and we were in our way.  As we arrived at the elevator the person from the ER ran up to is with a delivery bag and stopped a man with an empty wheelchair from entering the elevator.  "You need to wait, she's in labor."  I was surprised to be escorted to labor and delivery!  I must have really looked in pain!  Once we got to labor and delivery we stopped at the registration desk to get checked in.  I had another contraction at this point. Once my contraction was over I signed in and they put us in room 6; the same room where we delivered Michela.  I really must have looked in pain because we bypassed triage and went straight to our room.  Either that or they looked at my file that said I have a history of fast labors.

At this point my contractions seemed to be every 1.5 - 2 minutes apart.  I stood at the edge of the bed and asked if I could stand up or bend over the bed to be monitored.  I did not want to lie on that bed.  They said no problem and they put the contraction monitor and baby monitor around me.  The nurses were awesome and basically told me that it was my labor so I was the one to call the shots.

I needed to have an IV so they could give me antibiotics for the group B strep.  Unfortunately, one nurse tried twice and failed to get the needle in the proper place.  I'm sure I wasn't the easiest patient to stick a needle into since my contractions were coming so frequently.  After the second failed attempt she called David.  He was very meticulous and managed to find my vein.  I believe before David found my vein the doctor had me get on the bed so she could check my progress.  At 4pm I was 5 cm dilated.  I was a little disappointed to hear that I was only 5cm since the contractions were coming so fast and hard.  With that little bit of disappointment and pure exhaustion from not sleeping the night before I asked for an epidural.  I really wanted a nap.

After the epidural was in place (around 4:30)  my contractions slowed down to 5-8 minutes apart.  I was told to sit up right on the bed for 30 minutes to help the medicine move down.  Unfortunately I could still feel my contractions way down low.  They didn't hurt as much but they were still painful.  After about 45 minutes of sitting I was allowed to lie down to try to nap.  As soon as I lied down I started to shake uncontrollably.  My whole body shook violently and I couldn't make it stop.  Apparently it's normal.  In addition to the shaking the contraction pain I felt down low began to hurt a lot.  It was a constant pain that felt like I was being punched in the crotch.  I asked the nurse why I was feeling the pain and she said that she thought it was time for me to push.  She called the doctor and I said farewell to any possible nap.  I was at 10cm.  While the medical staff got prepared I asked if I could touch your head as you crowned.  The lead doctor said of course and asked if I wanted to pull you out after your shoulders passed.  I said yes and after 10 minutes of pushing I reached down, pulled you out, and put you on my chest.

You were born on July 20, 2013 at 6:37pm. Weighing 6lbs 15.6oz and 19 inches long.  Since we only had 2 hours of antibiotics instead of the recommended 4 hours we had to stay in the hospital 36 hours so they could keep an eye on you.

We couldn't be happier to have you in our family.

With all my love,

Mommy

Adorable Sisters

Tick tick tick

Mr. Nut,

We are 3 days past our due date and you seem to be pretty comfy in there.  I however am not comfortable any longer.  This last week has not been fun for me.  I get nauseous when I start getting tired.  I have horrible heartburn because you refuse to burro down.  And on Monday I managed to do something to my right food.  According to the doctor I have plantar fasciitis on my right foot.  That causes sharp pain on the bottom of my foot and heel.  OUCH!  The only cure for that is rest, ice, and ibuprofen.  I can't take ibuprofen until you come out - please take pity on your dear OLD mama.

I still go back and forth on whether or not I'm ready for labor but I know the only solution to the above problems is for you to come out and see the world.  Don't be scared.  I will be there every step of the way.  Tomorrow will be July 20th.  That will put us 4 days past our due date and I think it would be pretty awesome if you made that your birthday.  Tomorrow would mean that I carried all of my babies 4 days past their due date.  How cool would that be?  Okay, maybe it's not that cool to you.  But it is to me!  ;)

Come out, come out Coconut!  We are all ready to meet you and introduce you to the world!

With all my love,

Mommy

Ready or Not?

Dear Coconut,

Today we are 40 weeks - officially full term!  Wahoo!  Last week was a little rough some days.  When I reach 39 weeks I seem to hit a wall.  I had days when I really wanted to be done with pregnancy and I had days when I had no problem being pregnant.  Today I'm feeling good.

There was one night last week when I went to bed with some cramping.  My first thought was, "NO!  I'm not ready!"  The same night I woke up around 12:30am with a Braxton hicks contraction and again thought, "No!  I'm not ready yet!"  It think it's funny I that was my first thought since the day before I was so ready for you to come out.  Truth be told, I'm ready to hold you, snuggle with you, kiss you, introduce you to your family, and watch you grow into a strong man.  I'm not ready for labor.  Labor scares me.

There are many people out there that say that I had an easy labor with Penelope.  I beg to differ.  Yes, her labor and delivery was exceptionally fast (2.5 hours from first contraction to baby).   But it was far from easy!  The thing with fast labors is that there is no build up of contractions.  It begins with intense full force contractions that you need to breathe through.  There is no, "Oh, I'm having a contraction.  Lets time it."  It's a take your breath away, bend over and brace yourself contraction from the start.  And that scares me.  Labor hurts!

Of course, I hope your labor and delivery goes fast and smoothly like Penelope's but there is still a little fear in the back of my mind.  Dr. Tien keeps telling me that the third child is always a wild card.  You could come super fast or your labor could go on for days.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Another thing I noticed last week is you seem to be moving less.  And that worries me.  Obviously you're running out of room but give me a little jab here and there through out the day to keep me happy.  I would really appreciate it.  There were 2 days last week where you started to scare me.  During nap time I lied on the couch and ate ice to get you to move.  Apparently you don't like it when I eat ice because that woke you up.  :)  I'll talk about this with Dr. Tien this afternoon.  Maybe she'll help calm my nerves.

I love you Coconut and I'm ready to hold you in my arms.  I still think you'll come on Saturday (7/20) but I will be pleasantly surprised and completely content if you chose today, tomorrow, or any other day this week as your birthday.

With all my love,

Mommy

La La La La

Dear Penelope,

You are a singing machine!  One of your current favorite books is Love You Forever.  You sing it with me every time.  You will also sing along with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Baa Baa Black Sheep, & the ABCs.  I love it!

Keep on singing baby girl!

With all my love,

Mommy

Dear Michela,

While taking my belly picture you decided it would be great to take your belly profile too.  You make me smile.  :)

36 - 37 - 38

7/4/13

Dear Coconut,

We are 38 weeks now.  This was supposed to be posted 2 weeks ago but I failed.  It has been too hot for Michela to have quiet time in her room so I haven't really had time alone to update.  You're lucky.  We are moving to a house with air conditioning just a few weeks after your born.  You wont have to deal with sweltering heat in your room like your sisters have been.

The heat is difficult enough with 2 toddlers but turn me into a human incubator and I'm shot.  I really hope that it's not this hot when I go into labor.  I don't know how I'll manage the pain in heat like this.  Ugh!

On the bright side, it's starting to cool down so I don't have to sit in front of a fan or blow into my cup of ice water to keep cool.

Love you Coconut,

Mommy

Dear Coconut,

We are 37 weeks!  That means we get to see you in a few weeks!  AH!  We had our 36 week appointment on Friday and got to see you one last time as our inside baby.  You're head down and ready to go.  You're still pretty high but I'm not concerned.  Penelope stayed high until the day I delivered.

One thing I never planned on was moving when you're only a couple weeks old.  We have to move out of our current home so the owners can move back in or have family move in the house.  So we started our house search.  After 2 rejections due to other people offering more money we found a great 3 bedroom 1 bath home in San Jose.  YAY!  The only bummer is that we'll be moving when you're just an itty bitty.  I know you wont have any trouble adapting to the new house but I'm thinking between you and your sisters I may have a few sleepless nights.  Not how I planned on recovering from child birth.  All well.  I think we'll like living in the new house.  There are lots of kids in the neighborhood and pretty much everything we need is close.  Other than Michela's preschool and family is a little further away too.

Sorry I didn't update at 36 weeks.  I seem to be terrible with uploading pictures!  But here is my update. I changed responses a few times to accomodate my lack of posting.

How far along are you?  38 weeks

Total weight gain? Too much!

Maternity clothes? Yes

Stretch marks? No

Sleep? Love it!  I am still pretty comfortable while sleeping.  I attribute that to our awesome bed.  All I need is a pillow between my knees and I'm happy.

Food cravings?  Anything Cold - particularly ice cream  :)  It's been hot.

Labor signs?  No

Belly button in or out?  In

What do I miss?  Being able to roll over in my sleep without waking up.  Oh and the ease of getting up off the floor.  But I WILL miss feeling you move around.  And I'll miss the perfect shelf you make for my cup.  ;)

What am I looking forward to? Meeting you of course!  I am starting to get nervous about labor though.

Best moment of this week?  Learning that you are head down and ready to go! (That was at 36 weeks)  At 37 weeks the best moment was fulfilling my ice cream need at cold stones while it was 95 degrees outside.  And the best moment at 38 weeks (so far) was hearing your heartbeat at the doctor's office.  Your heart was beating around 140 BPM.

Movement?  Yes.  What I thought were kicks to my lower right side are actually punches.  In the ultrasound we saw on Friday (2 Friday's ago) we saw your little fists.  So now when I feel you push out on my right side I imagine you stretching and yawning.  It must be getting pretty boring in there.  You can come out when ever you'd like little man!  I'm ready!

Belly:
38 Week Belly Comparison.  It was WAY too hot this week to put on that sweater for a picture. So you'll just have to survive with having me in a different shirt this time.  Maybe there wont be a next picture but I'm guessing I'll get to update one last time.  Maybe I'll wear the same shirt I wore in the 38 week picture.  We'll see!
